Slovenian “Griga” Crowned Champion of the Desert Race at the Conclusion of the Salam Cycling Championship

Slovenian cyclist Paul Griga, representing Al Ahli Youth Team, was crowned the champion of the open desert race for professionals today, marking the final race of the seventh season of the Salam Cycling Championship organized by the Office of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum for Procurement and Finance.

The race, which featured both professional and amateur categories, saw the participation of 227 cyclists from 30 nationalities on a 50 km course amidst the expansive sand dunes of the Al Marmoom Nature Reserve, with total prize money amounting to 310,000 dirhams.

The race course included various challenges through sandy and rocky areas, water pools, and difficult paths, adding a high level of competitiveness.

Griga clinched the title for the professional category and received the first-place prize of 40,000 dirhams. His teammate, Dutch cyclist Thomas Hegerlund, finished in second place and received 30,000 dirhams, while Sufyan Hadi from the Abu Dhabi Cycling Club came in third and earned 20,000 dirhams.

In the amateur category, Rashid Al-Balooshi from the Al Shafar Jumeirah Cycling Team secured first place and received 30,000 dirhams. Majid Abdul Rahim Al-Balooshi from Dubai Police finished second, earning 20,000 dirhams, while Said Hassan from Dubai Police also took third place with a prize of 15,000 dirhams.

Following the race, the organizing committee crowned the top three winners in both amateur and professional categories. Additionally, the Dubai Police team was awarded first place in the second race for Emirati amateurs, which took place on February 4.

With the conclusion of today’s race, the Salam Cycling Championship wrapped up its seventh season, which witnessed great success and a variety of competitions for amateurs and elite male and female cyclists, alongside two desert races, with total prize money reaching 5 million dirhams.

Omair bin Jumaa Al-Falasi, CEO of the Office of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum for Procurement and Finance and head of the organizing committee for the championship, expressed his deepest gratitude to His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum for his continuous follow-up on all race details, which greatly contributed to fostering enthusiasm among participants and enhancing the championship’s stature as one of the strongest and best cycling competitions.

He stated: “Thanks to the directives and support of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the closing of the seventh season of the Salam Cycling Championship was remarkable and impressive. We made sure to diversify the races to achieve excellence. I extend my thanks to the competitors and teams, as they are the foundation of this success. With their feedback and contributions, we have elevated the races to an unprecedented high level.”

The head of the organizing committee confirmed that the diverse terrain of Al Marmoom Nature Reserve provided the committee with the opportunity to change the routes, especially since the committee members are fully aware of the area’s topography.

This season saw a record participation of over 1,000 competitors from both genders in all races, reflecting the championship’s contribution to spreading the culture of sports in general and cycling in particular, while enhancing its presence and importance for a healthier and happier community.

The seventh season of the championship commenced on December 27 and lasted for 46 days, featuring seven main races for amateurs and professionals of both genders, including races for Emirati male amateurs, a women’s Emirati race, the first desert race, an elite men’s race, the second race for Emirati male amateurs, an elite women’s race, and the second desert race
