Farah Al Marri Shines in the “Year of the 50th” at Al Salam Cycling Championship
Cyclist Farah Al Marri, a member of the Yasi team, was crowned champion of the “Year of the 50th” Amateur Emirati Women’s Cycling Race, held yesterday as part of the sixth edition of the Al Salam Championship. The event is held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and organized by his Office of Procurement and Finance.
This marks the second time Farah Al Marri has won, having previously taken the title in the first edition. Second place went to Hala Mohammed from Al Reef team, while third place was claimed by Mariam Al Awadhi from Al Shaafar Jumeirah team. Al Shaafar Jumeirah also secured first place in the team standings.
The race, spanning 108 kilometres, took place in the Seih Al-Salam area within the Al Marmoom Conservation Reserve, a new addition to the course introduced by the organizing committee. This distance is the longest for Emirati amateur women, having started at 47 kilometers in the first edition and increasing to 74 kilometers in the second edition.
The race, held amid strong winds reaching speeds of 37 kilometers per hour at times, saw the participation of 71 cyclists, either individually or as part of teams such as Al Reef, Al Shaafar Jumeirah, Al Bateen, Al Ain Riders, Al Wathba, Move and Shake, Yasi, Aerowake Cycles, 971 Athletes, and Dubai Airports.
Omair bin Juma Al Falasi, Chairman of the Higher Organizing Committee for the Al Salam Cycling Championship, expressed gratitude to His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum for his support of the race and his presence during parts of yesterday’s competition. In a press statement, Al Falasi said, “His Highness’s directives had a direct impact in positioning the championship at the forefront of sporting events, elevating cycling in the country to new levels.”
Al Falasi praised the participants’ performance and the fierce competition despite the challenging winds, which the cyclists faced with great determination and effective strategy. He also emphasized the readiness of all the participants. “We are pleased with the high level achieved by Emirati women cyclists, which underscores the role that Al Salam Championship’s women’s races have played in promoting the sport and elevating the performance of both Emirati and non-Emirati female athletes in the UAE,” he added.
Al Falasi further expressed his satisfaction with the successful organization of the race and the completion of the 108-kilometer distance without incidents. He noted the strong individual and team performances, affirming that the championship has met its sporting and societal goals, solidifying its place as a leading event in cycling both locally and regionally.
**Farah Al Marri: I Challenged Myself to Return as Champion Once Again**
Yasi team rider Farah Al Marri expressed her joy at winning the title and returning to the top after previously winning the first edition of the race. She said, “The race was extremely difficult from the start. I had to rely on myself since I was competing individually without teammates. However, I must thank Al Shaafar team, who helped me throughout various stages of the race.”
She added, “The presence of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, was my primary motivation in the race. His support encouraged me to keep going, and my desire to win was strong, especially after claiming the title in the first edition. I spent an entire year preparing both physically and technically for this race, and I’m delighted to have achieved my goal.”
**Al Salam Championship to Conclude on the 17th**
The sixth edition of the Al Salam Championship continues with the second “Year of the 50th” race for Emirati men on the 13th of this month, followed by the “Year of the 50th” Elite Women’s Race the next day. The championship will conclude with the second “Year of the 50th” desert race for Emiratis and residents on the 17th of the same month.
